Are you stressing about creating a perfect Thanksgiving table setting?
Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays of the year. It’s a time for reflection, appreciation, and nothing beats time spent with the ones you love.
But let’s get real for a second. If you’re the one who usually hosts Thanksgiving dinner, you know just how stressful Turkey Day can be. The to-do list is a doozy for this holiday: Plan the menu. Thaw the turkey. Clean the house. Do the grocery shopping. Prepare the guest rooms. And brace yourself for – yes, you know she’s coming – your mother-in-law.
Don’t get us wrong, we love our dear mothers-in-law. But we know they’ll soon be swooping into our homes with eagle-eyed evaluations of our Thanksgiving preparations, from the candles we burn to the moistness of those turkeys.
While we may not be able to help you baste your bird, there’s one thing we do know – home decor. For a perfect Thanksgiving table setting, here are seven of our handiest tips:
1. Start with a great dining room set.
You want your guests to be comfortable in your home, and that includes while they’re sitting at the dinner table. A beautiful dining set is half the battle when it comes to dinner decor. We’re partial to rustic and stately pieces like this set, pictured below.
When selecting a dining table, you’ll, of course, want to consider the look and feel you want to achieve in the end. If you’re really looking to make a statement, heavy wooden tables with ornate carvings are striking when paired with detailed leather chairs.
If you prefer chairs with a little more fabric instead, you can consider something like this dining chair below. It’s a perfect balance of fine leather and gorgeous fall colors.
2. Select a color scheme.
A popular color scheme for Thanksgiving tablescapes is, of course, the typical fall palette of red, orange, yellow, and brown. But we’re big believers in standing apart from the crowd. You don’t always have to follow traditional expectations! Here’s an example of a fall color palette that goes against the grain without coming off as too random:
Incorporating these colors into your napkins, place settings, and centerpieces is really quite easy. Keep in mind that you don’t have to overdo it, either. A little touch of color here and there can go a long way.
3. Mix and match textures, patterns, and colors.
If you know us at all, you know we love to make a statement. However, it’s often the subtle touches that make the most dramatic difference. As you can see below, mixing and matching textures, patterns, colors, and even dishware will take your tablescape from snooze-fest to striking soiree just like that.
If you want to make a statement but prefer a neutral color scheme, just focus on mixing and matching textures and patterns instead of color. Pictured below are cream-colored dishes with fine detailing, along with a Jan Barboglio glass doubling as a mini centerpiece This is a great idea for a place setting that remains neutral while still managing to stand out.
4. Incorporate natural elements into your centerpieces.
Thanks to the earthy colors of fall, using natural elements like gourds, berries, twigs, and foliage in your tabletop centerpieces is a no-brainer. This DIY pumpkin centerpiece from A Pumpkin and a Princess makes lovely use of natural items while making a statement to boot:
And Yvonne from StoneGable used a variety of pumpkins, pinecones, and foliage to create this gorgeous setting:
5. Don’t forget the little details.
While we’re all about making a big impression on our guests, the finer details pull everything together. Beautiful napkin rings, place cards, and other small touches like these (pictured below) really make a difference:

6. And don’t forget the beautiful food.
While we did mention that we can’t help you with Thanksgiving dinner, we can at least point you in the right direction!
Everyone has their own tricks for pulling off a perfectly moist turkey, but not everyone makes it look as good as it tastes. This turkey is plated with fresh grapes, pomegranate, and greenery for a fresh look.
Try not to drool too much when you gaze upon this decadent salted caramel cake. This gorgeous dessert is a centerpiece in its own right. The best part? You can get the recipe right here courtesy of Teighan at Half Baked Harvest.
7. Finally, admire your hard work!
When it’s all said and done, the thing that matters most is that you are satisfied with the end result (no matter what your mother-in-law thinks). Enjoy yourself this Thanksgiving – you deserve it!
